Phuket Set for IronKids Race

Phuket kids will have the chance to test their strength and stamina in running, biking and swimming at the IronKids Phuket Triathlon on April 22 at the Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club. Open to ages 6-17, the race is divided into three age groups, Junior, Intermediate and Senior.

Nok Air Launches China Flights

Thai budget airline Nok Air is set to spread its wings further with the launch of charter flights connecting Bangkok and Nanjing, China, this month.
 
“All of us at Nok Air are very excited to expand our services with these charter flights from Don Mueang to Nanjing, in the People’s Republic of China”, said Mr. Patee Sarasin, CEO of Nok Air. “Nok Air is pleased to carry Chinese tourists to Thailand during the Songkran festival season, and we’re also pleased to reopen our International routes with these charter flights from and to Don Mueang International Airport.”
 
Nok Air is operating the charter flights from Don Mueang to Nanjing on selected dates through the end of April 2012. The airline also offers flights to Vientiane, Laos, in addition to several domestic routes.

Phuket Ready for New Cricket Tourney

Twelve teams from around the world are set to compete in the first ever Kata Group International Cricket 7s tournament, set to play in Chalong, Phuket, from April 14-16. The 7s competition will be followed by a beach cricket event on Karon Beach on the 17th, then the main cricket event -- the Phuket International Cricket Sixes 201 -- will run from April 18-22.
 
Teams from Australia, India, Singapore, Qatar, UAE, England, Bangladesh and Thailand will compete in the tournament.

Phuket Songkran Set to Earn Big Baht

The Songkran Thai New Year festival in Phuket is expected to earn the island province more than 500 million baht, according to the Tourism of Thailand office. The 2012 festival runs from April 13-15, followed closely by the Phuket Bike Week and Phuket Gay Pride events, giving Thailand’s most popular resort a triple dose of festivities in April.
 
Patong visitors will gain an extra day of partying with the announcement by Bangornrat Shinaprayoon, director of the Phuket TAT Office, that the lively town will play host to a ‘Songkran on the Beach’ series of events on April 12 and 13, with cultural performances, a parade and water splashing among the activities planned.

Phang Nga Hosts Floating Film Fest

A select group of avid cinema fans were treated to a unique movie-watching experience at the recent Film on the Rocks Yao Noi festival held in Phang Nga Bay. A purpose-built floating cinema was set in the bay and the movies were projected onto the side of the dramatic karst cliffs that rise sharply from the sea.
 
Hollywood actress and style icon Tilda Swinton and acclaimed Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, winner of the 2010 Cannes Palme d’Or, presided over the event.

Phuket to Host Celebrity Chef

Renowned chef Jordi Roca is set to bring some hot new flavours to Phuket this week with an appearance at two island resorts. On April 6 he will be at RE KÁ TA beach club at the Boathouse on Kata Beach, then he heads north to Nai Thon for an evening at Trisara resort on April 7.
Mr Roca is a pastry chef noted for his creative flair in making desserts both heavenly in taste and scent, and is one of three brothers who run El Celler de Can Roca in Spain, a restaurant that has earned a three-star rating in the Michelin Guide since 2009. Together with his brothers he has appeared in the UK television series MasterChef: The Professionals and penned five avant-garde culinary books.

Phuket to Host Top Thai Political Expert

Those hoping to gain some insight into Thailand’s political situation will want to join the next International Business Association of Phuket meeting, which is hosting the well-known professor and media commentator Dr Thitinan Pongsudhirak.
 
The talk will centre around “the contours, dynamics and prospects of Thailand’s crisis and what we might expect in the near- and medium-term, with implications for the Thai macroeconomy, foreign investment, the expat community, and paradise enclaves in Phuket and beyond”.
 
The meeting will be held at Urban Food restaurant in Central Festival, starting at 6.30pm on April 6. Entry is 200 baht for IBAP members or 400 baht for non-members.
