Phuket Resorts Show Strong Bounceback
- Posted on 03 Jun, 2010
Global consulting firm Deloitte LLP has released figures that show
Phuket resorts led the way in economic recovery for the Asia-Pacific region in the first quarter of this year (January 1-April 30). The Deloitte report says, "In local currency, Phuket was the strongest performing market in Asia Pacific with revenue per available room (RevPAR) up 31.7%. More direct flights from Australia and Europe resulted in an occupancy jump of 30.1% to 79.6%, while average room rates grew only 1.3%."
Looking ahead, however, the Phuket tourism industry faces some challenges due to the political turmoil in Bangkok, even though it has remained peaceful and is located hundreds of miles from the capital. Deloitte reports that a slowdown in forward bookings is already starting to occur. Though the troubles have scared some tourists away, people who know Phuket are expected to return and take advantage of some great savings being offered by the island's top resorts.
