Phuket Golf: ‘Amazing Thailand’ Series Set to Launch

Phuket’s Loch Palm Golf Club is playing host to a series of golf events that will take players to three locations around Thailand. The 'Amazing Thailand - MBK Golf Tournament 2012' will launch in Phuket this Saturday, September 8. The second leg will be played at the Riverside Golf Club in Bangkok on September 18, followed by a day of play at Mae Jo Golf Club in Chiang Mai on September 22.
The winners of each flight in each region will be invited to play in the 'Amazing Thailand - The Tin Mine Open 2012' at Red Mountain Golf Club, Phuket, on Saturday, October 20.

Best Beach Cocktails Revealed

Acclaimed globetrotting magazine National Geographic has recently taken to the sands in search of the world’s best beach cocktails. Among the top-ten are the Margarita, the Daiquiri and the Mai-Tai, as well as the Gin and Tonic, which Nat Geo says originated in Goa, India, in colonial times as an anti-malarial concoction for the British. Taking the number-one spot is the Piña Colada, a rum and coconut cream drink perfected by a bartender in Puerto Rico some 60 years ago.

Phuket Art Village Fair

Phuket art lovers will have the chance to explore the local scene with the launch of the Phuket Art Village monthly art and culture fair, starting on Saturday, September 1 at 4pm. It promises to be an evening of fun with live Thai Gypsy music, a shadow puppet show, exploring the local art galleries and studios, BBQ food and drinks, and more.

Phuket Scores High in Traveller’s Poll

The results of the Smart Travel Asia 2012 Best in Travel Poll have been revealed, and Phuket was named the second-best holiday destination in Asia, just behind the Indonesian island of Bali.
Smart Travel Asia described its readers as being savvy and frequent travellers: “Our voters took an average 16.22 air trips over the past year and earned an average US$162,134 in household income. They travelled enough to tell the difference between crass and class.”
A number of Phuket resorts also earned top ratings in the poll, including Twinpalms Phuket, which placed seventh in the Leisure Hotels and Resorts category.

Phuket Hosts Pineapple and Flower Fair

The Phuket Pineapple and Flower Fair is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year with a wide variety of flowers and fruit on display and for sale at Saphan Hin public park in Phuket City. The popular local festival, which runs every day until August 22, features fresh produce and food for sale including coconuts, organic agricultural products and locally-made handicrafts.
The Phuket pineapple will also be prominently displayed. Known for its extra-sweet taste and petite size, this type of pineapple unique to Phuket is called ‘yanat’ in the local southern dialect.
Phuket Seafood Fiesta Coming Soon

Seafood lovers are in for a treat with the launch of the Phuket Seafood Fiesta 2012 in Patong next week. The festival will feature the best selections from more than 60 food shops and restaurants around the island. There will also be shows and exhibitions of the culinary arts, bartending skills and other hospitality services.
The festival will run daily from August 24-26 at the Jungceylon shopping centre in Patong.
Phuket Art Exhibition Launched

The original works of Spanish artist Gomez Bueno will be on display at the VR Gallery, at Mom Tri’s Villa Royale in Kata Beach. Gomez has become a well-known and celebrated artist, with a passion for love of the underground, graffiti and protest. His work has been displayed in galleries in Los Angeles, New York and Spain.

Phuket to Celebrate Mother’s Day

Millions of people across Thailand are set to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, who turns 80 this Sunday, August 12. The Queen’s birthday is also the national Mother’s Day festival, with many family activities and special events happening over this long weekend at several Phuket resorts, shopping centres and schools.
Those hoping to honour their mother in Thai style are encouraged to bring her a jasmine garland. This heavenly scented flower is a symbol of purity, like the pure love that a mother has for her children.
Phuket Lights Up for Buddhist Holy Days

Tomorrow’s full moon marks the start of two days of merit-making, candle-light processions and meditation for Phuket’s Buddhists. August 2 is Asarnha Bucha Day, which honours the day of the Buddha’s first sermon to his followers after reaching enlightenment. August 3 is the first day of Khao Pansa, the three month rainy-season retreat for Buddhist Lent.
During these two holy days, all of Phuket’s temples will be full of devotees presenting alms to the monks and joining various rituals including an evening candle-light procession on Asarnha Bucha Day.
